Simandou: The Hidden Cost of Guinea’s "Project of the Century"

While the world celebrates the startup of the Simandou iron ore project, a new report from Action Mines Guinée reveals a troubling reality for those living along the 650km corridor.

Production began on November 11, 2025, but for local communities, the "economic engine" of Simandou 2040 is leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

The Reality on the Ground

The annual report presented in Conakry on March 6, 2026, highlights persistent failures in community protection:

  • Broken Promises: Out of 48 official community complaints, only 3 have been resolved acceptably.

  • Cracked Homes: Dynamite blasts from construction are splitting the walls of family homes in Wataférédou and Mamou.

  • Lost Livelihoods: In Forécariah, artisanal fishing has been paralyzed by mud and silt, while farmers see their fields polluted and unproductive.

  • Health Crisis: Massive dust clouds from mining traffic are driving a rise in local respiratory diseases.

A Project for Whom?

Simandou is led by giants like Baowu Resources and Rio Tinto, promising a new era for the Guinean economy. However, the report warns of a "Resource Curse" repeat: where GDP rises, but the benefits are captured by a small elite while the local population bears the environmental and social costs.

"They came, they blew things up, they left. And we are still waiting for someone to take responsibility." — Resident of Mamou.
